The movement began more than a month ago in Marseille and also concerns hotels in Suresnes and Gennevillier which had to restrict their activity due to the disruptions.
A strike disrupts the activity of at least three establishments in Marseille and in the Paris region of Louvre Hotels Group, by employees demanding a salary increase of 300 euros.
The strike began on May 26 at the Golden Tulip Villa Massalia in Marseille, a 4-star establishment with around thirty strikers out of 80 employees according to the CGT, around twenty according to management.
“We are determined, we will not give up, we ask to be able to live with dignity from our salary. We are getting poorer day by day, we are asking for the sharing of wealth, ”explained Chahrazed Chabni, CGT union representative at Villa Massalia.
“We don’t earn much, 800/900 euros for a part-time job of 25 hours a week. You never get to 1,000 euros, ”says a striking chambermaid who claims to make between 12 and 14 rooms a day, and sometimes up to 18.
The strikers are also protesting about the situation of some of their colleagues from overseas or from distant countries who were refused four consecutive weeks of leave this summer to be able to return home after two years of pandemic.
Management “surprised” by this movement
Contacted by AFP, the management of Louvre Hotels Group said it was “surprised” by this movement given “the social framework of this hotel” with an hourly wage rate 8% above the minimum wage.
On leave requests, she estimates that she was able to validate no more than four out of nine requests given the summer rush. Finally, she considers that this movement is above all “in support of a union representative of the establishment who has a disciplinary procedure against him”.
An argument swept away by the CGT which thinks that “the management plays on this point to minimize” its action.
The same movement is underway in other establishments in Suresnes and Gennevilliers, in the Hauts-de-Seine, which is also causing disruption. “We limit reservations to a certain threshold”, says one within the group which owns the brands Golden Tulip, Campanile, Kyriad or Première Classe.
Since 2015, it has been a subsidiary of the Chinese Jin Jiang, the 2nd hotel group in the world, according to the MKG ranking.
